Architecture for Humanity invites you to a photo scavenger hunt for urban renewal

Your mission is to assemble a two to five person team, armed with digital cameras and transfer cables, for a photographic scavenger hunt.  Teams will explore a route by foot, starting at Voluto Coffee and ending at The Sharp Edge, documenting the beautiful and the ugly in Pittsburgh's neighborhoods.

"We're going to finish with a happy hour at the end of the scavenger hunt, where we'll look at the photos, and talk about the locations, using them as a starting tool for discussion," says Architecture for Humanity member Sophia Berman.

The participants will pose questions about the spaces they've photographed, such as, "could we put a bench here, could we fix this place up, and who do we need to talk to in order to get these projects going," Sophia adds.

Gunman violence could be linked to steroid abuseNorthumbria Police confirmed in a news conference that the name of alleged Gateshead gunman, Raoul Moat, was already "on their radar".

When asked if there was a history of violence by the 37-year-old, Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson said.

It was fair to say he was "known to the police" and that they have "significant information and background spanning a lengthy period of time" on him.

It has been reported that Mr Moat used, or is using, steroids as part of his bodybuilding regime. Since the 1980s there have been numerous medical and scientific studies into the effects of the drugs on human behaviour.

Well, a Laguna Beach urban design firm has hired five workers — and has plans to add a similar amount the rest of this year — thanks to burgeoning business from China.

SWA Group’s Laguna Beach office — designers of Orange County neighborhoods  from Shady Canyon to Woodbury — reports that it has seen its usual overseas workload “doubled and tripled … in part because China’s growth merely moderated during the recession.”

London Festival of Architecture Pavilion Unveiled

Price & Myers have revealed their design for a temporary pavilion outside the offices of New London Architecture for this summer's London Festival of Architecture. More than 300 events will take place during this year's festival, which runs from June 19 until July 4, themed under the 2012-related title The Welcoming City.

These include talks, guided tours and project discussions with Rem Koolhaas, Rafael Vinoly, Cecil Balmond, Alain de Botton, Francine Houben, and a live painting session with Will Alsop. The pavilion, formed of two intersecting hyperbolic paraboloids, will stand in Park Crescent, near RIBA's London HQ for the first weekend.

THE reconstruction of the 1870 Central Park Precinct building, on 86th Street, is under way, and only the decoratively tiled dormers peep out over a plywood fence. These are traces of the work of Jacob Wrey Mould, one of New York’s most talented and versatile architects. He described himself as “hell on color,” but his striking polychrome legacy is mysteriously mixed.

He described himself as “hell on color,” but his striking polychrome legacy is mysteriously mixed.Born in England in 1825, Mould apprenticed to Owen Jones, who in 1856 compiled the spectacular treatise on the theory of color called “The Grammar of Ornament,” widely posted on the Web.

Architecture students design 'masterplan' for Ruthin

Architecture students design masterplan for RuthinThe Ruthin: Market Town of the Future project is the brainchild of town mayor and trained architect Gavin Harris. He persuaded his former teacher, Wayne Forster, head of the Design Research Unit Wales, to allow students to study the area.

Ideas will be presented to members of the public next month, and could help shape a design plan for the future. The aim of the project is a long-term master plan produced by local people, against which any future developments will be judged.

Mr Harris, 39, the current mayor, a local hotel owner, said he persuaded his former teacher to become involved because, as an architect himself, he appreciated the benefits it would bring.

The Manchester Studio chairman Gavin Elliot will be making a presentation to the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) this Sunday. Mr Elliott will be telling the emirate’s education chiefs about BDP’s education projects including award-winning schools in the North West such as Blackpool’s Devonshire Primary - which scooped a RIBA award and BSF exemplar.
