Thousands of Abedonians will always have a special place in their hearts for the name of Miss Elizabeth Crombie Duthie, who used her wealth to provide future generations of Aberdonians with the gardens of which they can be proud.
In the late 1960s the original Winter garden was demolished reasons of safety. The opening of the first phase of the current Winter Gardens was held in April 1970. Since 1970 several phases of expansion have taken place and now the Garedens. covering two acres, are reputed to be one of the largest covered gardens in Europe.

Today the Winter Gardens are still listed in the top twenty free visitor attractions in Scotland, with annual visitor numbers at around 350,000. Over the years many events have been staged in the Duthie Park and Winter gardens. Education is an important aspect of the Gardens` actvities. Conducted visits are organised on a regular basis and groups of children are encouraged to develop an interest in the fascinating world of horticulture.
